St. John's Lutheran Church

Our Ministry

The purpose of our congregation is to carry on the express Will of God, “who will have all to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 4:1-5). It is God’s Will that His Church should grow, and that all of His lost children will be found. According, as we preach the Word of God, administer the Sacraments, instruct youth and adults, serve the needs of our members and all people, foster Christian fellowship and charity, we shall keep this central purpose in mind. Everything shall be done that Christ’s Church may grow in size and maturity, that disciples are made, strengthened in the faith, and equipped for the purpose of reaching out to bring others into discipleship.

Worship

Sunday at 9:30 a.m.

Worship Style – We use contemporary music the first and fourth Sunday of each month with songs that are in keeping with our Lutheran theology. We use the hymnal the third Sunday of each month. Our worship style is variable on the second and fifth Sunday of the month. In all cases, we make use of the key components of Lutheran worship forms.

Our Pastor

Pastor Kubke and his family have been among us since September, 2004. He and his wife, Karen, and their family have been very active in our congregation. They raised four children among us and on a nearby acreage. Pastor Kubke and Karen have a few years to go before they reach retirement age. Pastor Kubke has spent a great deal of time supporting Lutheran congregations in the area who have been in need of pastoral guidance. Currently, he spends much of his available time working beyond his service to the congregation on behalf of the Lutheran Church–Canada congregations in Alberta and British Columbia.

Cemetery

St. John’s Lutheran Church owns and manages a Lutheran cemetery on our property. The Alberta Cemeteries Act allows the use of cemeteries that are owned by religious organizations to be restricted to people who identify with their particular religion or denomination. Grave plots are available for members of our congregation, their spouses and their dependents. They are also available to members of our sister congregations and their own spouses and dependents. If you would like to make use of our cemetery but the deceased does not fit into the above categories, you may still apply for inclusion at the discretion of our Board of Elders.

According to Canada Revenue Agency regulations, “no member of a not-for-profit organization may derive a financial benefit from membership.” For this reason, our grave plots are sold for $700 at the time each grave is needed. The price is the same for cremation plots as it is for full burial plots. The reservations of a plot is only possible when a person is to be buried beside a spouse. Plots that are currently reserved but are not yet occupied must be purchased at the time of need, even if it was reserved before the CRA regulations went into effect. Concrete vaults are required. Please make your inquiries as to the use of the cemetery by phoning or emailing the church office via the contact information below.

How To Find Us

Our congregation is located at the intersection of Parkland Drive and Range Road 20. This places us about a half hour west of Edmonton, fifteen minutes west of Spruce Grove, and ten minutes west of Stony Plain. The easiest way to find us when traveling from Edmonton is to drive west on the Yellowhead Highway until you reach Range Road 20. This is the last level crossing before the point where the Yellowhead and Highway 16A meet on their way to Jasper. Turn left (south) until you arrive at Parkland Drive, which is where you will see both the school and the church. When coming from Spruce Grove or Stony Plain, you have the option of taking the 16A west until Range Road 20 or, instead, turning onto Parkland Drive where it joins the 16A just west of Range Road 13. In the latter case, follow Parkland Drive until just before Range Road 20. Access to the church parking lot is off of Parkland Drive at the pedestrian crossing sign.
